§ The GetJar study, run by
independent consulting firm by Chetan Sharma Consulting,
noted that over the past year, the number of app stores grew from 8 to 38 and
that there are even more in the works
§ Andy Rowsell-Jones, research
director for Gartner, said that annual sales of tablets will expand to 294
million by 2015. Apple’s iOS operating system is expected to have a 45 percent
market share by then, with Android expanding to 49 percent But iResearch’s Shen noted that free
applications still dominate the market, with fee-paying applications accounting
for less than 20 percent at present
§ He also made the bold
prediction that "mobile apps will eclipse the traditional desktop
Internet," even going so far as to say that "mobile devices will kill the desktop."

report from the research firm Gartner predicted in 2010 that Application Stores
will generate revenues of nearly USD 7 billion. That figure was a combination
of the USD 6.2 billion spent purchasing the mobile applications themselves
combined with an additional USD 0.6 billion generated through advertising
revenues from in-app ads. The
Gartner analysts also predicted that Mobile Application stores' revenue will
grow to USD 29.5 billion by the end of 2013.

2009 to 2015, Ovum expects Google's Android to increase its Smartphone base
from 5% to 18% penetration and its mobile application download share from 14%
to 26%

Pacific to experience the highest growth, with its share of the global market
set to quadruple from 5% in the early phase to 20% by 2015. This growth will be
driven by growing penetration of smartphones in the region coupled with the increased availability

report from independent telecom analysts suggest that mobile application downloads generated by
non-operator application stores will grow by a compound annual growth rate
(CAGR) of around 41%, globally over the next five years, with total downloads
almost reaching 21.3 billion by 2015. That is up from 2.69 billion in 2009

By 2015, applications targeting Smartphones and Tablets will outnumber PC
projects by four to one. Smartphones and tablets will represent more than 90
percent of new growth in the world’s device sales,” said Brian Prentice, a

At least 50% of enterprise e-mail users will rely primarily on a Tablet or
other mobile device rather than a desktop by 2016, Prentice noted
§ One major challenge for big IT companies is
that they tend to price their products very high, and they do not have the
flexibility to adjust their prices, which could mean an opportunity for Chinese
developers, Prentice said
§ China’s mobile
Internet market was worth 39.3 billion yuan
($6.23 billion) in 2011, up 97.5 percent year-on-year, according to iResearch.
§
China left the US to become the world’s largest consumer of Smartphones in the
third quarter last year, presenting huge growth potential for application
developers

But Prentice said that currently the Chinese application industry is still weak
and the market will still be dominated by foreign developers
