§Nearly 42% of  the US mobile subscribers now user Smartphones.
§ Mobile media usage has surpassed the 50% penetration mark.
§ Google‘s Android has captured almost half of the US Smartphone market, Apple iOS has nearly 30%
§ Mobile applications usage now equals mobile browsing; categories most accessed include health, retail, commerce-related categories such as electronic payments and auction sites.
§ More than 50% of the US’ Smartphone users have done a mobile retail search while inside a store, nearly 20% of users scan barcodes and 12.5% compared prices via their mobile in while in-store.
§ Mobile users accessing job listings has grown 74% in 2011, over 2010.
§ 77% more US Smartphone users accessed social networking or blog destinations via their mobile device year over year.
§Tablets are taking fourth place in Digital Media consumption after TV, Computers and Smartphones.
§According to a study commissioned by mobile application store operator GetJar, the mobile application market will reach USD 17.5 billion by 2012.

§

§ By then, the number of mobile application downloads will have also grown to nearly 50 billion from just over 7 billion in 2009

§ The GetJar study, run by independent consulting firm by Chetan Sharma Consulting, noted that over the past year, the number of app stores grew from 8 to 38 and that there are even more in the works
§ Andy Rowsell-Jones, research director for Gartner, said that annual sales of tablets will expand to 294 million by 2015. Apple’s iOS operating system is expected to have a 45 percent market share by then, with Android expanding to 49 percent  But iResearch’s Shen noted that free applications still dominate the market, with fee-paying applications accounting for less than 20 percent at present
§ He also made the bold prediction that "mobile apps will eclipse the traditional desktop Internet," even going so far as to say that "mobile devices will kill the desktop."

§A report from the research firm Gartner predicted in 2010 that Application Stores will generate revenues of nearly USD 7 billion. That figure was a combination of the USD 6.2 billion spent purchasing the mobile applications themselves combined with an additional USD 0.6 billion generated through advertising revenues from in-app ads. The Gartner analysts also predicted that Mobile Application stores' revenue will grow to USD 29.5 billion by the end of 2013.
§ Between the years 2009 to 2015, Ovum expects Google's Android to increase its Smartphone base from 5% to 18% penetration and its mobile application download share from 14% to 26%
§ Ovum expects Asia Pacific to experience the highest growth, with its share of the global market set to quadruple from 5% in the early phase to 20% by 2015. This growth will be driven by growing penetration of smartphones in the region coupled with the increased availability of applications with local relevance
§ A report from independent telecom analysts suggest that mobile application downloads generated by non-operator application stores will grow by a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of around 41%, globally over the next five years, with total downloads almost reaching 21.3 billion by 2015. That is up from 2.69 billion in 2009

§ By 2015, applications targeting Smartphones and Tablets will outnumber PC projects by four to one. Smartphones and tablets will represent more than 90 percent of new growth in the world’s device sales,” said Brian Prentice, a Research Vice President Gartner
§ At least 50% of enterprise e-mail users will rely primarily on a Tablet or other mobile device rather than a desktop by 2016, Prentice noted
§  One major challenge for big IT companies is that they tend to price their products very high, and they do not have the flexibility to adjust their prices, which could mean an opportunity for Chinese developers, Prentice said
§ China’s mobile Internet market was worth 39.3 billion yuan ($6.23 billion) in 2011, up 97.5 percent year-on-year, according to iResearch
§ China left the US to become the world’s largest consumer of Smartphones in the third quarter last year, presenting huge growth potential for application developers
§ But Prentice said that currently the Chinese application industry is still weak and the market will still be dominated by foreign developers
